Gun Vise DIY - How to Build - Woodworlds.com

Gun Vise DIY

With a little creative thought and some tweaking of designs it might be possible to knock out a few gun vises and sell them at local gun shows.  I haven't tried it but there are folks who buy these things.  Those of us with a lot more time than money tend to build our own.  The beauty here is there is really no wrong way to do it as long as it works.  However, if I were trying to build for resale, I would improve this design and make it look a bit more professional.  As it is, I just needed one so i built one with bits and pieces that I had on hand.  I used cut offs for all my lumber, leather scraps to line the faces and a spring that I have no idea what it goes to.

The stock support is removeable via small thumb screw so the bloody thing won't be always in the way as it is about 10 inches tall.  That is a 12 inch speed square sitting there to help you get a feel for height.  The base is pretty close to 27 inches long, the results of trimming some checks off an odd board.  The sides are 1 x 2 's glued to board and screwed from underneath.gunvise2
The gap on the left hand side is where the thumb screw is tightened down.  There is a sliver of leather on the right hand side to proveide some compression and cushioning.  The front support was a piece of sweet gum about 1 1/4 thick, 10 inches or so tall and 6 inches wide.
The snazzy lock is a small scrap of oak, pivoting on a washer with tension maintained by the unidentified volunteer spring.  I should know what it came from but I am clueless.  The butt support is from the remainder of the odd piece of sweet gum, glued and screwed to a scrap of reclaimed pine shelving.
As you can see in the above picture, the sweet gum is rough cut, right from the sawmill.  You can also see the leather insert to provide a decent surface to rest a nice gun on.gunvise5
Here you can see the thumb screw that holds the front end in place.

Here you can see the sandwich of pine and sweet gum and have another look at the snazzy lock.  Yup, that is a nail that spring is hooked over.  Note the leather on the lock and the rest for the butt.gunvise7Smith & Wesson SW001 Advanced Gun Oil with Cerflon - 4 oz.     Essential Guide to Handguns: Firearm Instruction for Personal Defense and Protection     Outers 32 - Piece Universal Aluminum Gun Care Case     Outers Universal 32-Piece Blow Molded Gun Cleaning Kit     The Gun Owner's Handbook: A Complete Guide to Maintaining and Repairing Your Firearms--in the Field or at Your Workbench
One final view showing the rest and the lock.  It's not the prettiest thing I have built nor the ugliest, I like it because it works.  For my purposes, this is all I need.  If I wanted to do some tweaking I would devise a better, more professional locking arrangement and add some elevating feet under the base.  The basics are what you want then you can go from there and get as creative as you like.  Build yourself a gun vise!
